1815/14 Spanish ROYALIST CHILE >Silver SANTIAGO MINT "One Real" of FERDINAND VII
    Description
    This is a silver
    "One Real"
    from Spanish
    "Royalist"
Chile. It was struck at the Santiago mint in 1815 using a die which had been left over from 1814. They just punched a 5 over the 4,
    see below.
    This was during
the revolution against King Ferdinand VII of Spain. Chile declared itself independent in 1810 but the mint was still in the hands of the
    "Royalists"
    .
These were struck in multiple locations in
    "Spanish America"
and circulated all over the world. At the time it was struck it would have been readily accepted as half of a quarter dollar or 12½¢ in the then new United States, this was during the Presidency of James Madison. This would have been called
    “One Bit”
, and passed usually as a dime. A
    “Spanish Milled Dollar”
    was an Eight Reales or
    “Piece of Eight”
    and as 8
    “Bits”
    was worth a dollar.
    Weight: 3.02 Gram, 21 Millimeter, .896 Silver. Mintage: 41,000.
    (both types, overdate and normal)

    (1801-1900)
    by Krause-Mishler.
    #6
    5.
    Obverse:
    FERDIN • VII • DEI • GRATIA • 1815 over 1914
    (the overdate is obvious)

Ferdinand the seventh, by the grace of God.
    • Laureate
    “Roman”
style bust of King Charles IV right. • A
    "transitional"
piece, the bust of the old King, Charles IV, Ferdinand's father, had not been updated in far off Chile.
    Reverse:
    HISPAN • ET IND • REX •
King of Spain and the Indies.
    • S with a small
    o
over it is the Santiago mint mark, 1 R is the denomination. The F • J is for the mint assayers Francisco Rodriguez Brochero and Jose Maria de Bobadilla, used at Santiago between 1803 and 1817.
    Spanish Arms:
Crowned Arms showing the Lions of Leon and the Castles of Castile, surmounted by the Lilies of Bourbon France
(added after the War of the Spanish Succession)
. The Pomegranate at the bottom is for Granada. Between Two Pillars representing the Pillars of Hercules
    (The Straits of Gibraltar)
with a Ribbon on them reading PLV VLT
    (meaning “More Beyond”)
    .
    The Coin:
It was nailed up for luck somewhere and it saw some hands and earned the wear and marks. With an original mintage of just 41,000, there aren’t many of these around anymore. As grading is subjective, please see the pictures and judge for yourself.
