Superior Silver Company, the maker of this spooner/sugar bowl, was a branch of the better known Middletown Plate Company. There are 12 places for spoons to hang on the perimeter of this piece from the Aesthetic Period. Around the perimeter of the body runs a paneled border with a decorated band below it. The panels on the band hold two different kinds of leaves separated by narrow panels with ribbons gathered with button ties. The piece has a pedestal base with three tiers. One of the handles is missing its leaf decoration. At one time there was a lid for this piece. Rather than sugar we like the spooner filled with vertical spoons ans well as spoons around the edge. It also can be used for flowers and greens. The opening is 5 inches and the height is 7 inches. We have left the spooner with the patina as it came to us.
