    Description

LETTERS FROM IWO JIMA, Screenplay by Iris Yamashita, Story by Iris Yamashita & Paul Haggis, 2006 For Your Consideration Screenplay, WB, 8.37 x 5.375-inch well-bound PB with stiff covers, 116 pp., excellent condition.
Eastwood directed this powerful story of the epic 1945 battle between U.S. Marines and the Japanese Imperial Army, which was dug in on the island of Iwo Jimo and prepared to fight to the death. It was Iris Yamashita's first screenplay and she scored big, gaining great authenticity from the two Japanese memoirs written by survivors. It's told from the Japanese perspective, and the lead actor is the great Ken Watanabe (THE LAST SAMURAI, MEMOIRS OF A GIESHA, BATMAN BEGINS, INCEPTION, THE KING AND I, GODZILLA). It was nominated for 4 Academy Awards, including Best Picture (Eastwood, Steven Spieberg and Eastwood's partner Robert Lorenz), Director, and Original Screenplay. It won for Sound Editing. It won a Golden Globe for Best Foreign Films and a slew of regional Film Critics Association Awards.
Of note, Spielberg filmed the companion film - FLAGS OF OUR FATHERS, during the same overseas production period. It tells the story of the Battle Of Iwo Jima from the perspective of the six Marines who raised the American flag when victory had been achieved, which became the most iconic of all WW II images.
