Steven Spielberg's Close Encounters of a Third Kind went through significant changes as the story was shaped by multiple screenplay writers and, finally, by Spielberg himself. The first person to take a crack at the story was Paul Schrader, long considered a gifted writer who authored the screenplays for Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, Last Temptation of Christ, and many more movies. The screenplay Shraeder turned in is nothing like the movie. Reportedly, Spielberg hated it. (You can Google around and find different accounts of what happened).
Schrader's version focuses on an Air Force officer, Paul Vanowen, whose job is to debunk flying saucer sightings but, guess what?, he himself has a close encounter. He spends the next 30 years trying to prove UFO's exist and has little luck. Then, he finally figures out that he has been going about his search all wrong.
This bound copy of Schrader's screenplay is in good condition. The pages are from a copier and, honestly, the reproduction isn't great, although easily readable. There are many hand-written edits evident, probably Schrader's. 132 pages.
