    Description

This catalogue of the Uruguayan Treasure Hoard describes the vast majority of gold and silver coins, gold bars and artifacts sold at the Sotheby's March 1993 sale in New York City.  Immodestly named "El Preciado," this is the story in both English and Spanish of the discovery and recovery of the Portuguese ship on lease to Spain "La Nuestra Senora de la Luz."  Complete with maps, color photographs, history of La Rio de La Plata,  An Introduction to the Coins with definitions of the different types of coins, a die chart for the eight Escudos of 1750 and 1751 from the Santiago Mint, A detailed and  most complete history of the Treasure.  This Treasure is a key part of the Spanish history as it contains coins from the end of the Cob Period of Lima and beginning of the machine-made coins of Santiago.  A most interesting period of Spanish coining.  This auction transpired in three sessions beginning March 24th and ending late afternoon of March 25th.  It contains 779 lots mostly of gold coins, but also gold contraband bars, silver coins and gold and silver artifacts.   A truly astounding and remarkable hoard, which may never be duplicated.  Sr. Ruben Collado and his diving team did a remarkable job in recovering such an astounding find!
