    Description

In between the classic Star Trek series and the first Star Trek motion picture, a second series almost went into production.  It was often referred to as Star Trek Phase 2.  The cast was set, stories were written and some screen tests were reportedly shot with the actors in new uniforms.  The series was halted when Paramount Studios decided to do a movie instead, using the cast of the series -- including Decker, Ilia and Xon, the Vulcan series replacement of Spock, picked when Leonard Nimoy refused to sign up for another series.
Kitumba is two episodes written as one story.  It is Star Trek's first deep examination of the Klingon empire and what writer John Meredith Lucas proposed was very different from the Klingon lore that has now been settled on.  For example, Klingons in these stories are not a race but a warrior class.  The spiritual leader is called the Kitumba.  The ethos of the warriors is based on the Japanese samurai, with the emphasis on honor, combat and ritual suicide.  These stories focus mostly on Kirk, McCoy, Xon, Decker and Ilia.
