Victorian Aesthetic Movement Silver Plate Sugar and Creamer C1880

Description

A very pretty silver plated sugar and creamer decorate with designs from the Aesthetic Movement. A light gold wash was applied over the silver to give the pieces a slight golden caste. The tops of the handles of both pieces have birds in a ring with a bunch of grapes cascading along the edge of the handles. The mouths of both pieces have flowers, bees, leaves and a butterfly. The grapes motif is repeated at the mouth of the creamer. The bodies of both have designs of fabrics inspired by Japanese designs. A portion of the body is shiny and a portion is rather matte.
Neither piece has a silver hallmark but both have the number “701” stamped in them.

Sugar bowl measures 6” tall x 7 wide x 3 ¼” diameter.
Creamer measures 6” tall x 6” long x 3 ¼” diameter.

CONDITION
The pieces were re-plated with a silver-colored metal at some point in the past, but this coat doesn’t tarnish and so I question whether it is actually silver. It has renewed the bright finish though. The creamer is discolored along the mouth on one side. Some of the silver-color coating has peeled off in the inside of the creamer. The sugar bowl has only a few blackened areas on the outside. There is a light brown deposit on one side that I was unable to remove. Both pieces have some scratches. For the most part though, both pieces are quite bright and shiny. The sugar rests flat but the creamer wobbles a bit when sitting on the table; the rim of the base is a bit dented on side.
It's a fun and elegant set to serve tea or coffee.
