Description
The state of Washington used sales tax tokens between 1935 and 1951. Depending on the availability of materials, these tokens were struck in aluminum, pewter, and plastic. This token was issued between 1935 and 1941, with 60 million minted. The number actually issued is unknown, and the number recalled and melted is unknown. The token is made of aluminum, and it is about 22mm in diameter. There is a hole in the middle that's about 3mm in diameter. The central hole is surrounded by small dots. On the right and left sides of the hole and dots are straight lines that extend to the perimeter dots. The edge is plain and, just inside of the perimeter there are small dots all around.
The obverse side of the token has "Tax" above the central hole, and "Token" below it. By the upper perimeter, there is "Tax Commission". By the lower perimeter, there is "State of Washington".
The reverse side of the toke is the same, with respect to the center hole, dots and lines. The text above the hole is "CH. 180". The text below the hole is "Laws 1935". The token doesn't have a date, but these two items indicate that it was issued under Chapter 180 of the Washington State Laws of 1935. By the top perimeter is "Tax On Purchase". By the bottom perimeter is "10 Cents Or Less". There is no specific indication that the token was valued at 2 mills.
The token is in very good condition, with a firm strike on the obverse. The reverse shows what could be interpreted as wear on the two indications of the tax law. However, since there isn't wear shown on the obverse, it would appear that the die has some wear in this area and that it's a somewhat poor strike. Please see the photos.
